Am Abend des 17. Januar 1961 versammelten sich die Amerikaner vor ihren Fernseh- und Radiogeräten, um die Abschiedsworte Präsident Dwight D. Eisenhowers an die Nation zu hören, der nach acht Amtsjahren das Weiße Haus verließ. Doch statt der erwarteten God bless America-Rede vernahmen sie etwas völlig Überraschendes. Zum ersten Mal, so warnte Eisenhower, drohe das Land unter die Dominanz einer mächtigen Allianz aus Militär und Rüstungsindustrie zu geraten. Schon jetzt seien dreieinhalb Millionen Arbeitsplätze von der militärischen Produktion abhängig, und die jährlichen Ausgaben für die nationale Sicherheit überstiegen die Nettoeinnahmen aller amerikanischen Unternehmen. »Der wirtschaftliche, politische, sogar der geistige Einfluss ist in jeder Stadt, in jedem Staatsparlament, in jeder Bundesbehörde zu spüren«, konstatierte der Präsident und mahnte: »Bei unseren politischen Entscheidungen müssen wir vor dem übertriebenen Einfluss des militärisch-industriellen Komplexes auf der Hut sein. Es besteht die Gefahr, dass unkontrollierte Macht desaströse Folgen haben könnte. Wir dürfen nicht zulassen, dass dieser Komplex unsere Freiheit und Demokratie bedroht.«

Was veranlasste Eisenhower zu so drastischen Worten? Immerhin handelte es sich beim 34. Präsidenten der USA um einen ehemaligen Berufssoldaten, der im Zweiten Weltkrieg die alliierten Streitkräfte in Europa kommandiert hatte, danach Stabschef der US-Armee und schließlich Nato-Oberbefehlshaber gewesen war. Seinen überwältigenden Wahlsieg als Kandidat der Republikaner im November 1952 verdankte »Ike«, wie ihn seine Landsleute nannten, vor allem seinem Kriegsruhm; von diesem Präsidenten erhofften sich die Amerikaner Führungsstärke im Kalten Krieg mit der Sowjetunion. Ein solcher Mann wählte seine Worte mit Bedacht, und gern betonte der General, ein Soldat wie er kenne die Schrecken des Krieges und er wisse, dass der nächste Krieg das Ende der Zivilisation bedeuten könne.

In der Tat hatte Eisenhower als Präsident stets eifersüchtig über das Primat der Politik gewacht und, aller antikommunistischen Rhetorik zum Trotz, einen Konfrontationskurs gegen Moskau vermieden.

What are those forces? Essentially, there are two. One is the power of the business cycle, the tidal force that throughout history has dictated when the economy expands and when it contracts. Economists struggle to analyze this, but they almost inevitably conclude that it cannot be rushed and almost resists political command. As the saying goes, the market will go where it is going to go.

In this regard, Obama has no advantage over any other pol. Even in analyzing the tidal force correctly, he cannot control it.

What else might affect the economy? The answer is obvious, but its implications are frightening. War and peace influence the economy.

Look back at FDR and the Great Depression. What finally resolved that economic crisis? World War II.

Here is where Obama is likely to prevail. With strong Republican support in Congress for challenging Iran’s ambition to become a nuclear power, he can spend much of 2011 and 2012 orchestrating a showdown with the mullahs. This will help him politically because the opposition party will be urging him on. And as tensions rise and we accelerate preparations for war, the economy will improve.

I am not suggesting, of course, that the president incite a war to get reelected. But the nation will rally around Obama because Iran is the greatest threat to the world in the young century. If he can confront this threat and contain Iran’s nuclear ambitions, he will have made the world safer and may be regarded as one of the most successful presidents in history.”

It’s Much Later Than You Think

To offer a bit of context for Chalmers Johnson’s latest post on the privatization of U.S. intelligence, it’s important to know just how lucrative that intelligence “business” has become. According to the latest estimate, the cumulative 2009 intelligence budget for the 16 agencies in the U.S. Intelligence Community will be more than $55 billion. However, it’s possible that the real figure in the deeply classified budget may soar over $66 billion, which would mean that the U.S. budget for spooks has more than doubled in less than a decade. And as Robert Dreyfuss points out at his invaluable blog at the Nation, even more spectacularly (and wastefully), much of that money will end up in the hands of the “private contractors” who, by now, make up a mini intelligence-industrial complex of their own.

Chalmers Johnson, who once consulted for the CIA and more recently, in his book Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic, the third volume of his Blowback Trilogy, called for the Agency to be shut down, knows a thing or two about the world of American intelligence. As he has written, “An incompetent or unscrupulous intelligence agency can be as great a threat to national security as not having one at all.” Now consider, with Johnson, just how incompetent and unscrupulous a thoroughly privatized intelligence “community” can turn out to be.

Most Americans have a rough idea what the term “military-industrial complex” means when they come across it in a newspaper or hear a politician mention it. President Dwight D. Eisenhower introduced the idea to the public in his farewell address of January 17, 1961. “Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peacetime,” he said, “or indeed by the fighting men of World War II and Korea… We have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions… We must not fail to comprehend its grave implications… We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.”

LIBYA AND WAR POWERS

The U.S. government acknowledges that U.S. military forces were involved in “armed conflict” this year in Libya, but it does not acknowledge that they were engaged in “hostilities.”

Earlier this year, State Department legal advisor Harold H. Koh attempted to parse these distinctions, which have significant legal consequences, and to deflect some pointed questions from members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  His responses to Senators’ questions for the record (pdf) from a June 28 Committee hearing were published last month.  The full hearing volume is here (pdf).

Ranghohe US-Militärs schalten Inserat gegen Irankrieg

Am gleichen Tag an dem Obama sich mit Netanyahu im Weissen Haus traf (Samstag), erschien in der Washington Post ein ganzseitiges Inserat, in dem ehemalige ranghohe US-Militärs und Geheimdienstexperten sich gegen den Irankrieg aussprechen.

“Herr Präsident, sagen Sie Nein zum Krieg der Wahl gegen den Iran!”

Weiter sagen die Generäle und Geheimdienstler, eine militärische Aktion gegen den Iran wäre “nicht nur unnötig, sondern auch gefährlich.”

Unterschrieben haben die Aufforderung:

- Paul Eaton, Generalmajor
- Tom Fingar, ehemaliger Vizedirektor für Anylyse der Geheimdienste
- Robert G. Gard, Generalleutnant
- Joseph Hoar, General der US-Marines
- John H. Johns, Brigadegeneral
- Rudolph Ostovich III, Generalmajor
- Paul Pillar, ehemaliger Geheimdienstoffizier für den Nahen Osten
- Lawrence Wilkerson, Oberst

Offensichtlich gibt es gewisse Kreise im amerikanischen Militär und Geheimdienst, die sich sehr grosse Sorgen machen, es kann zu einem “Präventivschlag” gegen den Iran kommen und sie drücken mit dem Inserat öffentlich ihre Bedenken aus. Die Folgen wären tatsächlich katastrophal.

Beim Treffen in Washington hat Obama Israels Regierungschef Netanyahu die Unterstützung der USA im Streit mit dem Iran zugesagt. Bis jetzt besteht Obama noch auf eine diplomatische Lösung, wie er es bezeichnet, obwohl von Diplomatie nichts zu sehen ist. Ein verschärftes Embargo ist keine Diplomatie, sondern bereits ein Krieg auf Wirtschaftsebene.

Laut Obama will er die Sanktionen wirken lassen und er verlangt von Israel deshalb Zurückhaltung. Aber ob sich Netanyahu daran hält ist fragwürdig, denn die Kriegstreiber in seiner Regierung wie Aussenminister Lieberman würden am liebesten sofort zuschlagen und Washington gar nicht erst um Erlaubnis fragen, wie sie sagen.

Der israelische TV Kanal “Channel 2″ meldet, die israelische Regierung hat schon entschieden den Iran anzugreifen. Siehe Artikel im “allgemeiner”, eine jüdische Zeitung in den USA. Der Besuch von Netanyahu in Washington war dazu da, um Obama darüber zu informieren.

Frank Wisner, a U.S. envoy sent to Cairo during the beginning of the anti-government protests, drew criticism this weekend for his comments that seemed to urge Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to stay in power. Now, his business links are being called into question.

Robert Fisk writes in London’s Independent that Wisner’s work for a law firm appears to pose a conflict of interest because that firm — not specifically Wisner — has advised the Egyptian military and handled litigation on the government’s behalf.

On Saturday , Wisner said it was “critical” that Mubarak stay in power.

“President Mubarak’s continued leadership is critical: it’s his opportunity to write his own legacy,” he told a group of diplomats and security experts.

The comment drew criticism from Egyptian opposition groups and created a diplomatic challenge for the Obama administration, which has been making public comments urging Mubarak to begin a transition of power. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Mubarak must at least move aside to allow Vice President Omar Suleiman to engage in talks with the opposition.

“The mixed messages have been confusing and at times embarrassing — a reflection of a policy that, by necessity, has been made up on the fly,” reports The New York Times….

I had thought we are in the middle of an economic war but things are apparently more serious. Great Britain makes preparations for a military intervention in Europe, should the economic crisis – see: the social unrest - get out of control.  Former Empire and hidden megalomaniac Great Britain will come to assist its European partners in need and therefore the British Armed Forces are getting ready to combat the uprising Europeans. Unbelievable?

In a report entitled “The Eurozone Crisis Poses Military Risk” UK Daily Telegraph quotes defence chief Gen. Sir David Richards  saying that “defence chiefs are drawing up plans to cope with the potential military fallout from the eurozone crisis.”

Looking ahead a possible collapse of the single EU currency would be followed by a completer breakdown of the social structure,  €uro-sceptists in UK, see as a challenge to come and aid their European partners.

Richards warned that economic issues pose a “strategic risk ” to Britain, “the biggest threat to Britain and its interests in the world.”

“I am clear that the single biggest strategic risk facing the UK today is economic rather than military,” Richards told the Royal United Services Institute, stressing that “ thriving economy must be the central ingredient in any UK Grand Strategy. This is why the eurozone crisis is of such huge importance not just to the City of London but rightly to the whole country and to military planners like me.”

He used his speech to raise questions about the ability of European economies to sustain their armed forces. He asked: “What impact will fiscal restraint and slow recovery have on European defence capabilities?’’

Gen Richards also noted that America, which is facing deep defence cuts, has said it will switch the focus of its main military effort from the Atlantic to the Pacific and south-east Asia.

That means “less emphasis on Europe and her problems,” he said. Gen Richards also accepted that Britain’s defence cuts carry risks, but insisted those risks were acceptable.

Daily Telegraph underlines, that “the military planning work has come to light after The Daily Telegraph disclosed last month that British embassies in the eurozone have been told to prepare emergency plans for the demise of the euro and the possible civil disorder that could follow.”

If I understand correctly, the good man says that now that the USA will focus less in Europe due to its own economic crisis, UK should take the upper hand and lead any military actions in Europe, should they ever occur.

Do not ask about the NATO’s role. That’s for external enemies.

I believe there should be immediately a survey among Greeks although a referendum would be much much better. The question would be “Who do they prefer: British Armed Forces or German Armed Economists?”

This article comes two days after the NYT published another horro scenario: Greece Abandons Euro, Returns to Drachma and Military Takes Over (!)

PS I would have never thought that economic crisis would hit a country’s best people right in the head and revive expansive ambitions depriving from a so-called ”glorious” past.
