Croatian Passports ‘Being Sold for €1,000′

01 December 2008 Zagreb _ Foreign newspapers, websites and billboards across Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia are full of adverts offering to sell Croatian passports, Croatia’s Slobodna Dalmacija daily reports.

The paper says that passports from Croatian citizens, especially Serbs who fled Croatia after their rebellion came to a halt in 1995, are bought for €900 to €1,000 and sold to interesting parties.

Croatian passports are also often the targets of thieves, so there have been many cases of passports and identification cards having been stolen from hotel rooms.

The prices of passports on the black market are in the range from as little as €1,000 to as much as €5,000, depending on the validity of the passport and the reliability of the seller who has to guarantee not to report his passport stolen to police for a while.

Croatian passports have been found in possession of members of the mafia in South America, the United States, all of the countries in the European Union, Russia, Ukraine and South Africa.

Apart from classic falsifications, a special problem are those who hold dual citizenship, that is, people who live in Serbia and have requested Croatian documents. Currently some dozens of thousands of such people have Croatian documents, the daily writes.
