Die neue General Staatsanwältin von Albanien: Ina Rama

Albania appoints first woman chief prosecutor

23/11/2007

TIRANA, Albania — Parliament elected Ina Rama as the country’s new chief prosecutor, with 83 votes in favour, 33 against and 5 abstentions. Rama, 35, becomes the first woman to hold the post. She was nominated by President Bamir Topi on Thursday (November 22nd), immediately after he accepted the resignation of the previous chief prosecutor, Theodhori Sollaku. Prime Minister Sali Berisha described Rama as an independent figure trusted by nearly all parties in parliament.

Sollaku, meanwhile, described his ouster as part of a political farce. Lawmakers from opposition parties criticised Topi, whom they say has proved to be Berisha’s puppet. Sollaku was dismissed for failing to tackle organised crime. (Balkanweb, Top-Channel, RFE - 22/11/07)

The statement of President Topi to the media about the Prosecutor General.

November 24, 2007

The President of the Republic, Bamir Topi answered today to the media interest about the Prosecutor General.

Question from NEWS 24 : Do you think that the newly appointed Prosecutor General will give a new tempo to the fight against crime and corruption?

President Topi : Not only me, but I am certain that the entire Albanian society too believes that. If you have consider this calmly, the election of the new Prosecutor General fully met the required standards by the entire Albanian society, and I believe also by the Albanian politics and international institutions as well. She is a person who has not been involved at all in politics, has no political affiliations, has been an excellent student in all the cycles of education that she has attended, a student that was listed first in the School of Magistrates, a very capable judge at the Serious Crimes Court of Appeals, who has realistically face concrete and very difficult cases which she has successfully dealt with, and a very communicative person. It would be enough for you to listen to the impressions of people who have known her closely during school and in the community where she lives and in that of jurists. I believe it is the best choice, according to the standards, which will realistically contribute to the improvement of the climate of cooperation among the institutions and above all on the establishment of the Rule of Law.

Rama, femra e pare Kryeprokurore
Rozeta Rapushi
E Premte, 23 Nentor 2007

Me zbritjen e tyre, mazhorances i mbeteshin 78 deputete e per cudi Ina Rama u votua me 83 vota. E para qe votoi per te ishte Kryetarja e Kuvendit, Jozefina Topalli, e cila nuk mundi te prese radhen per te dhene voten.

Majority ‘Thanks’ Opposition for Contributing to Elect Top Prosecutor

TIRANA - Majority expressed on Friday its pleasure that the election of Albania’s new top prosecutor, Ina Rama, replacing on Thursday Theodhori Sollaku who was dismissed was made possible by some votes of the left-wing opposition. Rama got 83 votes on Thursday in parliament after a secret ballot when it is known that the right-wing majority could have at best 82 votes, furthermore when five deputies of the majority did not attend the plenary session.

26/11/2007

TIRANA, Albania — New chief prosecutor Ina Rama told Voice of America on Sunday (November 25th) that she was not elected by the right wing majority, rejecting suggestions of connections to the ruling Democratic Party (DP). All three key leaders in Albania — President Bamir Topi, Parliament Speaker Jozefina Topalli and Prime Minister Sali Berisha — have welcomed her to the post of chief prosecutor, replacing Theodhori Sollaku.
