Špegelj Tapes were audio and video recordings of conversations of Martin Špegelj and Josip Boljkovac, which were secretly taken by the Yugoslav Army counter-intelligence service KOS, then turned into a documentary film by Zastava military film centre, and aired in January 1991 to the larger Yugoslav public.

In the conversations, Špegelj and Boljkovac—at the time of filming Croatian Ministers of Defence and of Internal Affairs respectively—discuss arming of Croatians in preparation for secession of Croatia and the impending civil war with local Serb minority, which started the Log revolution and rebelled.

The more controversial parts of the tape consider brutal ways in which to deal with families of the army personnel. The tapes were a shock in the still peaceful Yugoslavia, months away from the civil war.

The Croatian leadership, including the main “actors” themselves, initially quickly dismissed the tapes as fake, claiming that the presumably innocuous videotaped conversations were subsequently dubbed. Their authenticity, however, was later all but confirmed, and Stipe Mesić was one of the first on Croatian side that admitted that parts of the tapes are probably authentic, although some of the sentances were taken out of context.[1]

The JNA leadership wanted Špegelj tried for treason. Croatian president Franjo Tuđman dismissed Špegelj from his post due to the affair (and possibly was ready to hand him over), but the later fled into Austria, returning less than a year later when it became apparent JNA has attacked Croatia in support of the local Serbs, triggering the Croatian War of Independence.

Serbs in Croatia will never be there again for as long as we are there and we hope until now too their supremacy is a thing of the past. Their Knin will never be Knin again. We are going to enter Knin too. Knin has to disappear as Knin. All Croats should bear this in mind and we are going to create a state created at all costs, if necessary, at the cost of shedding blood. (Boljkovac)

Police chief, gunman die in Macedonia shootout

SKOPJE, Macedonia — A local police chief and an ethnic Albanian gunman were killed in a shootout near the border with Kosovo on Monday (September 10th). Two police officers and two gunmen were also injured. The incident occurred in the village of Vaksinci, where an ethnic Albanian insurgency began in 2001. The gunfight started when several men opened fire at a police patrol and officers returned fire. One wounded gunman crossed into Kosovo where he was arrested and hospitalised in Pristina. Macedonian authorities identified him as Zaim Halili, nephew of a former guerrilla who was captured recently after escaping from prison in Macedonia.

On Monday, parliament met in emergency session to discuss the security situation. Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska downplayed the shootout, describing it as a clash with criminals. (Dnevnik, Vecer, Utrinski Vesnik, Reuters, AFP, AKI, UPI, BBC - 10/09/07; MIA, Makfax, A1 TV - 09/09/07)

In other news Thursday, Macedonia’s Justice Ministry formally asked UNMIK to extradite Zaim Halili in connection with a shooting Monday. He and two other gunmen allegedly attacked a police patrol in the village of Vaksince, killing one police commander and injuring two officers. Halili, whom investigators say led the group, has been charged with murder, assault on a police officer, and violence.
