Die strahlenden Sieger

Einem Bericht der italienischen Nachrichtenagentur AGI, daß bis Ende des Jahres 2003 bereits insgesamt 109 italienische Soldaten an den Folgen des Kontakts mit Uranmunition gestorben sind.

Nach Auskunft der Aufsichtsgruppe für die Gesundheit des italienischen Militärs starben damit 41 Prozent der während des aktiven Dienstes gestorbenen Soldaten an Erkrankungen. “Die Gesamtzahl von 109 Todesfällen übersteigt die Gesamtzahl der Personen, die als Folge von Straßenunfällen gestorben sind. Jeder, der die Bedeutung dieser Zahlen leugnet, tut dies arglistig und die Wahrheit ist, daß unsere Soldaten da draußen sterben, weil sie nicht ausreichend gegen abgereichertes Uran geschützt sind”, so Domenico Leggiero von der Aufsichtsorganisation.

Aufgrund des Zeitraums kann davon ausgegangen werden, daß die betroffenen italienischen Soldaten während ihres Einsatzes im Kosovo mit “abgereichertem” Uran (DU) in Kontakt gekommen sind. Dieser Einsatz begann im Jahr 1999. Italien hat sich seitdem mit bis rund 3.000 Soldaten an der KFOR-Truppe beteiligt.

Selbst wenn man vernachlässigt, daß eine durch DU verursachte Erkrankung in den allermeisten Fällen nicht kurzfristig zum Tod führt, so hatten bei einer üblichen Einsatzdauer von sechs Monaten nur 27.000 Soldaten die “Gelegenheit”, mit “abgereichertem” Uran in Berührung zu kommen. 0,4 Prozent der dort eingesetzten Soldaten sind demnach bereits verstorben.

Dieses Verhältnis dürfte sich auch bei der Bevölkerung des Kosovo von fast zwei Millionen Menschen in einem zumindest ähnlichen Verhältnis wiederfinden. Schätzungen zufolge waren dort 100 bis 200 Tonnen Uranmunition eingesetzt worden.

Blickt man nun zum Irak mit seinen über 25 Millionen Einwohnern und der geschätzten Zahl von 1.100 bis 2.200 Tonnen eingesetzter Uranmunition, so wird einmal mehr deutlich, warum der Einsatz dieser Waffen bereits als “Totalmord” bezeichnet worden ist.

Wie der KnightRidder am Mittwoch meldete, hat mittlerweile der dritte Truppenaustausch von US-Soldaten im Irak begonnen. Damit werden bald über 300.000 US-Soldaten mit einer großen Wahrscheinlichkeit mit Uranmunition in Kontakt gekommen sein werden.

Die Folgen für die irakische Bevölkerung, die den Folgen dieses Waffeneinsatzes über einen noch weitaus längeren Zeitraum ausgesetzt sein wird, werden noch ungleich schwerwiegender sein. Bereits als Folge der “nur” 350 bis 750 Tonnen im “1. Golfkrieg” eingesetzten Uranmunition hat sich die Zahl von Krebsfällen bei irakischen Kindern versechsfacht. Die Zahl von Geburtsfehlern und Leukämie hat sich seitdem verdreifacht.
TRANSCRIPT OF PRESS CONFERENCE GIVEN BY THE FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR JACK STRAW, AND THE ITALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, MR FRANCO FRATTINI, 18 MARCH 2004

FOREIGN SECRETARY:
Ladies and Gentlemen, it has been my pleasure to welcome to London my good friend and Foreign Minister colleague, Franco Frattini, the Italian Foreign Minister. As always we have had a wide-ranging and useful discussion on matters bilateral, matters European and matters international. We first discussed the terrible bombings which took place just a week ago in Madrid, we reiterated our combined commitment to support Spain in whatever way we can. This will be discussed tomorrow at a meeting of European Interior Ministers, and again on Monday where Franco and I will be meeting our Foreign Minister colleagues in the General Affairs and External Relations Council of the European Union, and the recommendations from both these Councils will be discussed at the European Council, the Summit, at the end of next week.

Overnight there has been a terrorist attack in central Baghdad. The latest report suggests that 27 people have died. We have confirmed, very sadly, that a British citizen, Mr Scott Mounts, has been killed in this terrorist outrage, and I would like here to offer the British government’s condolences, to his family and friends our deep sympathy.
I understand that a second British citizen, Giles Ash, has been injured. Both were working for private companies in Baghdad. I want to pay tribute to all those who are working in Iraq for a better future for the Iraqi people, despite the risk of terrorist attack, and the terrorists make these attacks in Iraq, not least because they can see the success that the Iraqi people are themselves making of their new freedom to build a new Iraq, freedoms which were underlined in the major opinion poll which was published at the beginning of this week, showing very significant majority support in Iraq, both for the coalition action and for the sense that life is getting better, and will continue to get better, for most people across Iraq.

British and Italian forces are working together in Iraq, as they are elsewhere in the world, and I want to take this opportunity to thank Franco, his Prime Minister Berlusconi and his government and people for Italy’s steadfast support to the United Kingdom and to the coalition.

I would like to thank first of all my colleague and friend, Jack Straw, for this very friendly hospitality here today in London. We talked about several issues of common interest. I have not much to add to what the Foreign Secretary has said. On terrorism, Italy and the UK agree on the priority that we have to give to the fight against international terrorists. We are already working very hard and we agreed to strengthen the cooperation between our two countries, as well as within the European Union, and also with the third countries, with particular reference to the Arab countries, moderate Arab countries. Next week in Brussels we will confirm this strong European political will and we adopt a formal solidarity clause which is a very important political very strong message of all EU member states against terrorism, that is a solidarity clause quite same to the clause included in the NATO Treaty.

Romania’s spectacular landscape and low labour costs have sparked a growing interest among moviemakers.

In recent years, Romania has turned into a Hollywood production paradise, in large part because of lower costs. Major movies are now being made in the country, featuring the likes of Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, Wesley Snipes, Renee Zellweger and Jean-Claude van Damme.

The two major Romanian studios are enjoying an unprecedented boom in business. They are Castel Film, located 40km from Bucharest in the village of Ciolpani, and Mediapro Studios, based in the town of Buftea. The latter is one of the largest media and entertainment groups in Eastern Europe.

Slovak members of KFOR caught smuggling cigarettes, alcohol from Kosovo

PRISTINA, Kosovo, Serbia — A group of Slovak soldiers serving with KFOR has been caught smuggling cigarettes and alcohol from Kosovo, the Slovak Defence Ðœinistry confirmed on Wednesday (August 1st). About 450 litres of alcohol and 321 cartons of cigarettes were found last week in the luggage of 132 soldiers, in a truck bound from the Sajkovac base to Slovakia. The country’s General Staff plans to establish a special commission to investigate the case. (Beta, B92 - 01/08/07)

Former prime minister Vlado Buckovski and former defence minister Lazar Elenovski testified at an earlier court hearing that they knew of the army’s intent to dispose of the obsolete weapons, and claimed the price of 300 US Dollars per machinegun was realistic.

Former Macedonian prime minister charged with embezzlement

SKOPJE, Macedonia — The country’s financial police charged Prime Minister Vlado Buckovski on Wednesday (August 1st) with embezzling around 3m euros. Buckovski, who was defence minister at the time, allegedly abused his office in connection with an October 2001 deal to procure spare parts for tanks. According to the indictment, ministry funds meant for the company MZP-FOP instead ended up in a special account for Buckovski and the company’s director. Buckovski, who is not currently in Macedonia, has pledged to co-operate with the investigation. Retired Army Chief of Staff General Metodi Stamboliski was arrested Tuesday in connection with the case. Reports say he ordered four times more spare parts than necessary, causing around 2m euros in losses to the state. He retired in March 2004. — Spiegel-Online-Reporter Matthias Gebauer hat wenig erfreuliches über den bisherigen Ablauf der ersten “demokratischen” Wahlen in Afghanistan zu berichten: Bei der ersten demokratischen Wahl in Afghanistan ist es zu schweren Unregelmäßigkeiten gekommen. Zahlreiche Afghanen sind mehr als einmal an die Urnen gegangen. Die Tinte am Finger, die eigentlich bis zu drei Wochen sichtbar bleiben sollte und so mehrmaliges Wählen verhindern sollte, erweist sich in vielen Fällen als abwaschbar. “Die waschen sich ihre Finger vor unseren Augen”, berichtet … Gebauer aus Kabul. Mehrfachwählen sei fast schon zum Sport geworden. “Manche Leute haben zehn nicht abgeknipste Wahlausweise, mit denen sie von Wahllokal zu Wahllokal fahren.” Alle Kandidaten außer dem zur Wiederwahl angetretenen Präsidenten Hamid Karsai riefen nach einem Treffen zum Boykott der Wahl auf und forderten eine Annulierung. Die Wahl sei eine Farce und die Uno Teil des Betrugs, stand in der Erklärung, die auch Innenminister Junus Kanuni unterschrieb. Kanuni gilt als chancenreichster Herausforderer des Übergangspräsidenten Hamid Karsai. Zumindest gab es bisher keine Anschläge.

Update: Die OSZE sowie unter anderem die Bundesregierung werten die Wahlen letztlich aber doch als “fair” und Erfolg. Hm, war das mit dem Schmuh also nun reine Übertreibung oder spinnt sich die internationale Gemeinschaft die Wahlen schön? Spiegel Online muss natürlich bei der Version der Glaubwürdigkeitskatastrophe bleiben.
