Kosovo: On the Best National Interest that Money Can Buy

Foreign press notes that the U.N. Secretary General has received a detailed report from the German Intelligence Service (BND). Ban Ki-moon had requested himself that a section of BND be posted to the U.N. Mission at Kosovo to unravel the web of complexities which envelop this province of Serbia. As is widely known the U.N.’s Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari has proposed to sever Kosovo from Serbia, act which would create a newly independent state on the grounds of Albanian demographic preponderance.

If implemented, it would not only violate the U.N.’s own resolution to the contrary. It well could give a green light to similar candidates in Spain and France, in Great Britain (independent Scotland) as well as lead to a Mexican-American movement (seconded by Mexico and supported by the Union of Latin American States) demanding that California be severed from the United States and given the status of an independent and internationally recognized state. Why not independent Texas, not to add more candidates around the planet Earth? But, these projections are not of immediate concern, especially when contrasted with a sensational and detailed revelation. The assigned BND team, led by Brigadier Luke Neiman. discovered without much effort that Mr. Ahtisaari had frequent contacts with Albanian separatist leaders and had received large sums of money with the equivalent value of about 53 million dollars. The details are listed with teutonic precision.

Among them are recorded conversations about money transfers, specific bank accounts and codes in Switzerland and Cyprus, substantial supplies of heroin, procurement of two female white slaves and a visit to Mr.Ahtisaari’s residence (at 6.23 AM on 12 February 2007) of a Jeep with the plate of PR-443-22CD. It was a vehicle owned by the Albanian “provisional” government at Kosovo’s capital of Pristina. In addition, it appears that Mr.Ahtisaari has some old pro-Nazi skeletons in his closet and has cultivated a pro-Muslim bias stemming probably from the Nazi/Fascist/Muslim alliannces during World War II.

Whithout knowing the BND discoveries, the present writer has urged the previous U.N. Secretary to dismiss Mr. Ahtisaari without delay and appoint someone who is not in any way imbedded either with the Albanians or the Serbs. No doubt because Mr. Ahtisaari is a former head of state and is “widely respected” internationally, the ex-Secretary did not act. With the detailed information from the BND, it should be impossible to allow him to keep his post or accept his plan a priori.

It is not a secret that Albanian sources have made donations to members of our Congress and that the recipients have argued in favor of taking Kosovo from Serbia and givig it to the Albanian majority.Even a former U.S. Secretry of State, an ardent supporter of independent Albanian Kosovo , has now a telecommunications company in Kosovo itself. There does not seem to be anything illegal in donating electoral funds to our Solons. The impact is not going to be at home and what happens overseas as a result of our pro-Albanian Legislators is of no concern since they are not accountable to anyone. The policy of the previous home Administration could be summed-up: “feed the Serbs to the Muslim desiderata” as this would buy good will in the Middle East. The result is the birth of Al-Q’uaida by way of Bosnia and the growing Wahabyya among the Albanian Muslims at Kosovo. If we can perhaps be excused because of knowing very little about Balkan history and the context in which it unravels, this is not true of Western Europe even as it marches with the repetitive U.S. Foreign policy. Western Europe knows well that the Serbs were “keepers of the gates “ through which the Ottomans tried to pass and attain the conquest of entire Western Europe. An older European generation also remembers that the Serbs had made considerable contributions to the Allied victories in World Wars I and II but our people do not even know that one of the smallest minorities in the U.S., Americans of Serb origin, produced seven men who earned Congressional Medals of Honor in both Wars. Our public does not know that the Serbs saved over 300 fallen American pilots in WW II and returned them to duty. But, it has been informed by our Government and mainstream media that “the Serbs” are the sole aggressirs in ex-Yugoslavia and all the other “tribes” in it are victims despite an obvious tripartite fratricide assisted very much from abroad. Virtual reality replaces reality itself. All in the name of some geopolitical ideology which has encapsulated the highest echelons into its web in the mirific belief that we can alter human nature and change the world permanently.

Seit Wochen berichten Medien in aller Welt über jeden Schritt von Paris Hilton. Einer US-Fernsehjournalistin reichte es jetzt: Sie zerriss vor laufender Kamera eine Meldung über die Hotel-Erbin mit Gefängnis-Erfahrung, eine zweite Nachricht steckte sie in den Reißwolf.

Washington - Die Fernsehjournalistin Mika Brzezinski sollte den Nachrichtenblock in der Morningshow des TV-Senders MSNBC mit einer Meldung über Paris Hilton beginnen. Sie weigerte sich, der Moderator der Sendung, der ehemalige republikanische Abgeordnete Joe Scarborough lästerte. Als ihr der Redakteur die Meldung zum wiederholten Mal als Aufmacher vorlegt, zerreißt sie den Zettel, nimmt das Feuerzeug eines Kollegen an sich und droht damit, die Fetzen anzuzünden. Eine weitere Meldung über den Ex-Häftling übergibt sie dem Reißwolf.

Protest im Frühstücksfernsehen: Mika Brzezinski hat genug von Paris Hilton
Sie wolle über die Geschichte nicht berichteten, sagte Brzezinski zu ihren Kollegen und den Zuschauern, vor allem nicht als Top-Story einer Nachrichtensendung. Die Meldung mit der sie schließlich nach Wortgefechten mit ihren Kollegen die Nachrichten beginnt, handelt von Kritik eines republikanischen Senators an der Irak-Politik von US-Präsident Bush.

Mika Brzezinskis Live-Protest gegen die mediale Dauerpräsenz von Paris Hilton ist auf You Tubezu finden, die Zahl der Abrufe nähert sich der Millionengrenze. Die Mehrheit der 2.500 Kommentare ist positiv. Ein Blogger schrieb: “Ich habe eine neue Heldin und ihr Name ist Mika Brzezinski.”

Die Online-Ausgabe der britischen Zeitung “The Guardian” weist darauf hin, das Hilton und Brezinski Gemeinsamkeiten haben: Zum Beispiel sind beide Töchter von berühmten Vätern. Der Vater der Journalistin ist der frühere nationale Sicherheitsberater Zbigniew Brzezinski. Seine Tochter sei den amerikanischen Fernsehzuschauern weitgehend unbekannt, obwohl sie eine erfahrene Journalistin sei. Sie arbeite seit Jahren für verschiedene Nachrichtensendungen, unter anderem habe sie am 11. September 2001 live für CBS aus New York, berichtet als die Türme des World Trade Centers einstürzten. Die Einschaltquoten der MSNBC-Morning-Show lägen weit hinter denen der Konkurrenz zurück.

Der Guardian äußert Zweifel daran, ob die Protest-Einlage gegen Paris Hilton echt war. Es könne sich auch um eine Inszenierung gehandelt haben. Die Reaktionen der Kollegen auf die Versuche Brzezinski, ihr Manuskript in Brand zu setzen, hätten aber nicht wie Schauspielerei gewirkt.

D ie fünf großen Religionen scheiden sich in zwei Gruppen: in solche, die östlich und solche die westlich vom Hindukusch entstanden sind“, schreibt Helmuth von Glasenapp, in seinem Weltbestseller, dem Standardwerk über die fünf Weltreligionen. Er teilt sie ein in die „Religionen des ewigen Weltgesetzes“, die sich östlich des Hindukusch entwickelt haben und in solche der „geschichtlichen Gottesoffenbarung“, die westlich des Gebirgszugs entstanden sind.

Die östlichen Religionen sind der Hinduismus, der Buddhismus und der chinesische Universismus (Taoismus und Konfuzianismus). In ihnen ist die Welt ewig, ohne Anfang und ohne Ende. Sie erneuert sich unaufhörlich.

Die westlichen Weltreligionen sind das Christentum und der Islam. Sie sehen beide den Kosmos und seine Bewohner nur durch das Wirken eines unendlich überlegenen persönlichen Gottes ermöglicht, der alles aus dem Nichts ins Dasein gerufen hat. Und der es dann, wenn die Zeit sich erfüllt hat, wieder untergehen lassen wird.
Mitten durch den eurasischen Kontinent zieht sich die Religionsscheide

Mit diesem Buch versteht der interessierte Laie, wie sich die einzelnen Religionen voneinander unterscheiden und worin sie ihre Besonderheiten haben. Das Buch ist keine Anleitung zur Religionsausübung. Es ist eine objektive Analyse, die vor allem Information vermittelt.

Mitten durch den eurasischen Kontinent, im Gebiet des heutigen Afghanistan, wo die Gebirgsmassive des Hindukusch liegen, zieht sich die Religionsscheide. Die aggressiven, erobernden Religionen finden sich im Westteil Eurasiens. Die Religionen des Ostens scharen ihre Anhänger eher friedlich um sich und verzichten im Großen und Ganzen auf Missionierung – mit oder ohne Gewalt.

Sowohl im Christentum als auch im Islam gibt es dagegen den Missionsauftrag. Bekannt sind das moslemische Gebot, den Glauben notfalls mit Feuer und Schwert auszubreiten, auch wenn dies im Koran nicht ausdrücklich gefordert wird, und der christliche Missionsauftrag des „Gehet hin in alle Welt und lehret alle Völker und taufet sie im Namen des Vaters und des Sohnes und des Heiligen Geistes.“ Er geht zurück auf den Evangelisten Markus im Neuen Testament der Bibel, Kapitel 16, Vers15.
Aus dem Judentum heraus entwickelte sich die christliche Religion

Die Entstehungsgeschichte der fünf Weltreligionen liegt zeitlich verhältnismäßig nahe beieinander. Zwar fußen alle auf älteren Überlieferungen, die als Vorläufer dienten, aber zu religiösen Gemeinschaften mit verbindlichen Lehren entstanden vier von ihnen binnen weniger Jahrhunderte.

Der Hinduismus mit seiner Lehre vom Karma entwickelte sich in Indien, etwa im 8. vorchristlichen Jahrhundert. Zwei Jahrhunderte später etablierte sich ebenfalls in Indien die Lehre Buddhas. Seine Zeitgenossen Laotse und Konfuzius prägten parallel dazu in China den chinesischen Universismus. Aus dem Judentum heraus entwickelte sich die christliche Religion, die sich zunächst im römischen Reich und später in der ganzen Welt verbreitete. Sie beruft sich auf die Geburt des Jesus von Nazareth im Jahre Null, womit gleichzeitig die neue abendländische Zeitrechnung markiert ist.

Im Standardwerk Glasenapps wird auf eine eigene Darstellung der jüdischen Religion verzichtet. Sie wird lediglich bei der Darstellung der „Religionen der geschichtlichen Gottesoffenbarung“ in einem Unterabschnitt behandelt unter dem Stichwort der „geschichtlichen Voraussetzungen“. Aber man erfährt als Leser durchaus, wie sich das Verhältnis „der jüdischen und antiken (hellenistischen) Komponente innerhalb des Christentums“ im Laufe der Zeit verändert hat: „Die neue Religion entstand in Palästina, ihr Begründer und seine ersten Anhänger waren Juden und kannten nichts anderes als die jüdische Geisteswelt. Aber schon bald nach Christi Tod begann die junge Kirche in steigendem Maße Heidenmission zu betreiben, sich der griechischen Sprache zu bedienen und antike Gedanken in sich aufzunehmen und zu verarbeiten. Dieser Prozess setzt sich dann während der ganzen Folgezeit fort, so dass die Kirche zur Zeit ihrer höchsten Blüte in ihren Lehren und Riten stärker von antiken als von jüdischen Ideen bestimmt erschien. Die Reformation hat, indem sie viele der antiken Elemente als ‚heidnisch’ auszuscheiden suchte, wieder die jüdischen Bestandteile mehr in den Vordergrund gerückt.“
Der Islam wurde 600 Jahre später zum großen Gegenspieler des Christentums

Nazi hunter raps ‘fascist’ Croatian rock concert

Thousands of people attending the rock concert by the singer “Thompson” shouted the infamous Ustasha regime’s salute of “Za dom spremni,” while numerous participants came wearing Ustasha uniforms and symbols, the center said in a press release.

“Under the current circumstances, I believe that the time has come to prohibit public concerts by those who write songs of nostalgia for [the] Jasenovac [concentration camp] and inspire the show of Ustasha symbols, which constitute open and blatant incitement against all the minorities in Croatia,” Zuroff wrote in a Monday letter to Croatian President Stjepan Mesic.

“I believe that only if someone of your stature and outstanding anti-fascist credentials will lead the efforts to combat this ugly wave of revived fascism, can this extremely dangerous new trend be stopped before it engulfs Croatia,” he continued.

The Ustasha regime ran a puppet government after the Nazi invasion of Yugoslavia in 1941.

During their four years in power, the Ustasha carried out a Serb genocide, exterminating over 500,000 people, expelling 250,000 and forcing another 250,000 to convert to Catholicism.

The Ustasha also killed most of Croatia’s Jews, 20,000 gypsies and many thousands of their political enemies.

After the war, most of the Ustasha leaders escaped to South America and Spain.

During the collapse of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, there was a certain resurgence of Ustasha symbols coinciding with the ethnic hatred that remained after the wars.

On June 17th, the Croatian rock group Thompson, named after the Thompson submachine gun, staged a monster concert in the huge Maksimir sports stadium in Zagreb, Croatia. On July 2nd, the New York Times ran a news analysis that began:

“On a hot Sunday evening in June, thousands of fans in a packed stadium here in the Croatian capital gave a Nazi salute as the rock star Marko Perkovic shouted a well-known slogan from World War II.”

Thousands of people giving the Nazi salute? It sounds like a nightmare.

The fascist salute was born of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini’s self-parodying obsession with imitating the Roman Empire. (Italian Fascists still proudly, and ludicrously, call it the Roman salute.)

The German Nazi Party, always on the alert for something to be proud of, picked up the salute as did various clerical-fascist groups, such as the Falange in Spain

Highway set to bring Albania and Kosovo closer

KUKES, Albania (Reuters) - The shortest route from Kosovo to Albania’s sparkling Adriatic coast makes a big dog-leg through the long, deep glens of neighboring Macedonia.

The direct route from Serbia’s breakaway province is a 234- km (145-mile) drive of seven hours over mountains 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level.

At 35 kph (20 mph), it takes travelers through a seemingly endless coil of dizzying hairpin bends.

“Traveling on that road has been a real trip through hell for me,” says Rexhep Shahu, a poet who often makes the journey to his home town Kukes, near the Kosovo border.

“It is a symbol of impossibility.”

That will all change in 2009 when a new highway links Kosovo to Albania. But it is a controversial project that some critics believe has more to do with dreams of a “Greater Albania” than the economic benefits touted by its backers.

Ethnic Albanians make up 90 percent of Kosovo’s 2 million population.

Since the end of the 1998-99 Kosovo conflict, hundreds of thousands of them have braved the old mountain road to get to Albania’s beaches, bringing in some 350 million tourist euros ($470 million) every year.

Many plied the tortuous route this month to witness the Albania visit of U.S. President George W. Bush, whose country led the NATO intervention in 1999 to expel Serb troops from Kosovo and end the killing of Kosovo Albanian civilians.

Bush was cheered for pledging that Kosovo Albanians will get their independence “sooner rather than later”, despite Russia’s strong backing for Serbia, which adamantly opposes it.

When Bush meets Russia’s President Vladimir Putin at his family’s Maine coast estate in the United States this weekend, the two leaders may reach agreement on Kosovo, or they may not.

No one is betting, but Albania has already set to work on the new road — a 180-km four-lane highway that will cut travel time between the two sister nations to two and a half hours or less.

DEVELOPMENT OR SYMBOLISM?

“The road goes through the poorest region of Europe and it will definitely revive it,” Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha says of the 600 million euro highway, Albania’s biggest infrastructure project to date.

“It will bring new life to the port of Durres and give access to the sea to Kosovo, Macedonia and southern Serbia.”

But others say the project is really a step towards the nationalist dream of a “Greater Albania” that would unite all ethnic Albanians in the region in defiance of the West.

As a result of the controversy, potential donors have stayed away. Albania is financing the road on its own from commercial loans, which critics say it cannot afford.

“Donors saw it more as a political than an economic project,” said Pandeli Majko, a former Socialist prime minister in Albania who started pushing for the project in the late 1990s.

But he believes the road would “crystallize a year-round tourism industry and double the size of the Albanian market”, while allowing both communities to rationalize agriculture.

“Kosovo will probably start planting wheat while Albania deals with livestock and vegetable-growing,” Majko said.

Analyst Mentor Nazarko said money would be better spent on a project such as European Corridor Eight, crossing Albania and Macedonia, or on domestic and regional roads.

But Majko and Berisha wanted “a place in history”, he said.

“The political dimension of this project looks bigger than the economic dimension,” said Nazarko. “Spending 600 million euros is a rather pharaonic project for Albania right now.”

Regardless of cost worries, construction is moving along. Albania contracted the U.S.-Turkish Bechtel-Enka group to build a two-bore tunnel, Albania’s first, along the most difficult section, and bulldozers are at work daily near Kukes.

“I would have worked for free just to see this road unite our people,” said Nasuf Bimbashi, a Kosovo contractor.

Still trying to repair the wounds of the decade of war triggered by the break-up of Yugoslavia, the West opposes any “Greater Albania” ambitions, just as it opposes any dreams of a mono-ethnic “Greater Serbia” or “Greater Croatia”.

The pro-Western leaders of Kosovo and Albania have dismissed any such plan. But for some, the road alone will do the trick.

“We need not talk too much about a union,” said Kosovo truck driver Refki Morina. “The road itself effectively unites us. When the Berlin Wall fell, they didn’t need to do anything else. Here, we simply have to build a highway.”

French car manufacturer Renault said on Monday (June 25th) that it will invest 100m euros in a new engineering centre in Romania over the next two years. The centre will focus on the technological improvement of engines and produce spare parts for export to Turkey, Russia and to countries in Central Europe and North Africa.
