Rumania: When two fight, the third wins

When two fight, the third wins

As President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu continue their quarrel, Romanian bloggers ponder an old proverb.

The ongoing political battle between Romanian President Traian Basescu and Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu took another turn earlier this month. In a prime time speech before the nation, Tariceanu called on all politicians — starting with the president– to stop the reciprocal attacks and allegations that, he said, risk overshadowing “Romania’s major objectives and priorities”.

At the very least, Tariceanu said, they should take a break until the elections for the European Parliament, in May.

“The move is a smart one,” comments e-Extrema. “On the one hand, the prime minister scores points at the expense of the president — who keeps, by contrast, the image of a spiteful brawler willing to neglect the country’s best interests for the sake of getting even with somebody. On the other hand, he distances himself from the impeachment procedures against the president, initiated by the opposition Social Democratic Party.”

“But the prime minister’s strategy also has its weak points,” she adds, noting that Tariceanu’s speech came in the wake of allegations, by National Initiative Party vice president Lavinia Sandru, that he collaborated with Russian secret services.

The prime minister’s conciliatory position “could be interpreted as giving in to blackmail”, e-Extrema writes.

“Basescu has pushed it too far,” comments Anonymous. “It’s time for him to take a break. His behaviour is atypical for a head of state, especially a European one. The worst part here is not the fact that they argue, but that we make a fool of ourselves before Europe. And that comes less than two months since the accession.”

“Personal and party interests come first, to the detriment of the national ones. This is the problem of all the Romanian politicians,” laments Grumpy. “This clearly denotes lack of political maturity — a general phenomenon after 1989 (not to mention the period before).”

“Who knows? Maybe they will eventually learn from their mistakes,” he adds.

“Let them argue, dear folks!” suggests Forza. “This is the best way to realise who we’re dealing with and come to the right conclusions for the next elections, whether they are early or in due term. We can be the third party to win in this dispute, as the Romanian proverb [”When two fight, the third wins”] goes.”

“The problem is whether we have any alternative to these politicians. And I’m afraid we don’t. Still, hope dies hard,” Forza concludes.
